HISTORY
dances with wolves
Louis the Sun King
Coulombaud wines are produced in a beautiful hidden valley in Provence, protected and framed by mountains and dense oak forests, largely unchanged since the days of Louis the Sun King. It is said that the last wolves of the region retreated to the Coulombaud valley as encroaching civilisation drove them further into the wilderness forests . It is still easy to imagine today that Coulombaud could have offered the wolves a last refuge.
french revolution
napoleons family
At the time of the French Revolution, the tiny village, next to the vineyard, was so deeply buried in the heavily forested wilderness that Napoleon hid his family here in the dangerous days before the Siege of Toulon, which brought him fame and the title of General aged just 24. Legend has it that his three sisters danced the night away on their arrival…
total purity
soil and climate
Far from sources of pollution, the Coulombaud vineyard, dating from 1640, was abandoned by man and reclaimed by nature early in the 20th century. This temporary closure of the vineyard proved an unexpected blessing.
The vineyard was allowed to revert to its natural state just at the point in time that farmers throughout the world discovered the power of herbicides and pesticides. The use of these toxic chemicals became commonplace in vineyards throughout the 20th century polluting the land and the products deriving from them.
